I was listening to BBC’s World Service this morning and heard a report from Steve Rosenberg about Germany’s new chancellor, Angela Merkel.
And it annoyed me to no end that Rosenberg continually referred to her as “Mrs. Merkel.” Mrs.??? Did reporters ever refer to her predecessor as “Mr. Schröder” …? NO! They called him “Chancellor Schröder” or “the Chancellor.” Why shouldn’t Angela Merkel be addressed the same way? Or at the very least “Dr. Merkel” - which is how she signs the opening letter on her own website. Grr.

right–and G.W.B wouldn’t have dared try to give any of Chancellor Merkel’s predecessors a shoulder rub.
